Maniate. Makira Province. Solomon Islands
I love the creativity and make-do attitude of the Islanders. My favorite example of this is the Sago Palm surf boards that they wedge together with sticks and shape with bush knives. These fin-less a rather splintery boards give hours of fun to the local grommies, many of who can maneuver their logs with style. The canoes are carved with knives and chainsaws from ‘canoe’ tree’s and are the main source of transport for most people in the Solomons – plus they provide a great core workout while trying to balance the things, if ever you feel the need for alternative exercise.
