Roviana Lagoon. Solomon Islands.
The skulls are those that belonged to different tribes captured during tribal fighting before the missionaries arrived. The man would paddle to different islands in their war canoes, sounding the shell horns. Those captured in the fighting were usually eaten or taken as wives. I’ve been told that if the men brought back a particularly cute baby sometimes the women of the village would drop the baby in the dirt or step over the child meaning it was then unclean and no longer fit to be eaten. The woman would then have spared the childs life and would adopt it as her own.
Oh the bravery of the early missionaries.
